What is an applicant tracking system, (ATS) and what does it have to do with my resume?

Updated: Aug 27, 2020

An applicant tracking system is simply a tracking and recruiting tool for recruiters and hiring managers. Candidates are populated in this system usually from the parsing of their resume from another source such as a job board. These systems are built to allow the ability to search through profiles/resumes using a search string. You want to ensure that the format of your resume is formatted to interact well with the ATS and search string. As it relates to your resume, you want to ensure that key words searched for are on your resume. Software developers especially tend to feel the need to leave things off that may be assumed. Though not all cases are the same its important that software developers as an example overstate VS understand when putting their resume together.
